This weekend at DC's RRP meeting, it was officially announced that DC’s third weekly series, Trinity, will begin in June. The book's lead story, starring Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman will be written by Kurt Busiek, with art by Mark Bagley.

"The series will follow Countdown, but, as with Countdown and 52 which came before it, will be unrelated to the previous weekly series. That said, Trinity will be “apart,” that is, occurring in the DC Universe, but not tied to other events happening in the DCU."

You can catch DC Universe #0 (the bridge between Countdown to Final Crisis #1 & Final Crisis #1) which will sell for 50 cents (!) should be on sale at the end of April. Also, two new, 6 issue miniseries: Rann/Thanagar: Holy War (starting in May) and Reign in Hell, starting in June.

World War II is over. The Cold War has begun. The Age of the Superhero is in decline. But where are the heroes of tomorrow? From the perspective of those brave individuals who made it happen: encounter Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman, who survived the anti-hero sentiment of the Cold War, as well as eager newcomers like test pilot Hal Jordan and scientist Barry Allen, poised to become the next generation of crime fighters. All leading to the mounting threat of an alien presence on Earth, where dozens of characters from the '40s, '50s and '60s eras of DC Comics team up to defeat it.

Justice League: The New Frontier, rated PG-13 for violent content/images, is scheduled for release on February 26, 2008. The next release in the series will be Batman: Gotham Knight.

Wonder Woman News:
Msnbc has a poll going on who should be the next Wonder Woman. Animated News recently talked to director Joss Whedon about his plan to bring WW back to her roots. "I think she sort of sprang out fully formed, much like Athena herself. And, you know, it's a question of really getting behind that... In the '40s, when it was first done, she came to the world from Paradise Island and then went about her business, and so that experience, which is really a rite of passage, which is the same as any hero has to go through, has never really been investigated the way I want to. So, to take it back to the beginning and really say, 'Well, really, what was it like for an Amazon princess to come amongst us?'" Though not previously a fan of Wonder Woman specifically, Whedon's comic book and "superhero familiarity, however, should instill some hope in loyalists". He also promised he was "not going to do anything silly". Cinematical reports rumors are still swarming around the idea Mischa Barton (O.C.) being on top of the list of potentials who might star.

Here's VH1's interview with Whedon:
"Originally, I was hesitant," said the 40-year-old Whedon, who refers to himself as a "comic-book geek." "But then it's also sort of why I became really interested, because she doesn't have so much baggage for me, the way, say, Spider-Man would."
Whedon, however, admits he's been handed a bicycle with training wheels attached.
"It's been in development for a lot of years. Producer Joel Silver called me, and I came in. When he pitched it, he had a very clear idea of what he wanted to do, which I thought was really smart," Whedon said. "But it was very unformed, and it sort of formed in my brain.
"What I began to realize is I had no choice but to write it," he said.
Whedon, who is in the process of completing the upcoming "Serenity" film based on the cancelled Fox series "Firefly" said he's anxious to flesh out the back story of the Amazon princess.
"I think she sort of sprang out fully formed, much like Athena herself," he said. "In the '40s, when it was first done, she came to the world from Paradise Island and then went about her business, and so that experience, which is really a rite of passage, the same as any hero has to go through, has never really been investigated the way I want."
How much will he borrow from more than 60 years of continuously produced comic books? While Whedon says he's never been a huge fan of Wonder Woman's ongoing titles, his familiarity with them will likely encourage long-time comics fans.
"I mean, I've seen some really good books, some really great work by people — late-'80s artist/writer George Perez and late-'90s artist/writer John Byrne, a lot of guys," Whedon said. "Obviously, I've seen the covers by female superhero artist Adam Hughes, but who hasn't? However, I've seen her more with the Justice League of America and stuff like that."
When asked if he plans to incorporate important parts of the Wonder Woman legend in the film, Whedon did mention that he's going to be very picky when choosing what to use and what to ignore.
"I have a take on all of them," he said. "It has to do with who she is, and they have a certain integrity. I'm not going to do anything silly.
"There's a reason why she has those bracelets. There's a reason why she's got the lasso. I think it's going to work out really well."
He made no mention of the invisible plane that has been phased out of the most recent comics incarnations, though.
Of course, developing the Wonder Woman film isn't all hard work. There are benefits from this project that Whedon has already begun to enjoy.
During the recent Wizard World Los Angeles comic book convention, actress Jewel Staite approached Whedon with a proposal. "Can I be in your Wonder Woman movie? I'll love you forever," she said.
Whedon's response to Staite and everyone else interested in the part is that he isn't leaning toward any actress — at least, not yet.
"No leaning," he said. "I'm standing straight."

press release:

BURBANK, CA - Silver Pictures, producer of the revolutionary, $3 billion-grossing Matrix franchise, has signed Joss Whedon, creator of the phenomenally popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series, to write and direct the feature film action adventure Wonder Woman based on the DC Comics character. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

"We are excited about working with Joss," Robiov said. "He brings great energy and creativity to the process. His work on Buffy makes him uniquely qualified to handle the Wonder Woman character."

"There's no one better than Joss to adapt the legendary Wonder Woman comic book character created in the 1940s into a dynamic feature film for 21st century audiences," producer Joel Silver added. "Wonder Woman was the first great female superhero to emerge from comic books and later inspire millions of fans in her television incarnation, but unlike her counterparts Batman and Superman, this groundbreaking heroine has yet to be reinvented for the feature film arena."

"Wonder Woman is the most iconic female heroine of our time, but in a way, no one has met her yet," Whedon said. "What I love most about icons is finding out what's behind them, exploring the price of their power. When Joel and I began discussing the character, I realized there is a woman behind the legend who is very fascinating, very uncompromising, and in her own way, almost vulnerable. She's someone who doesn't belong in this world, and since everyone I know feels that way about themselves, the character clicked for me."

Whedon created and executive produced the hit television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons on The WB and UPN, based on his screenplay for the 1992 feature film of the same name. Whedon also created and executive produced the successful Buffy spin-off series Angel, and wrote the screenplays for the films Toy Story and Alien: Resurrection. He is currently completing post-production on the feature film Serenity, which he wrote and directed based on his television series Firefly.

Wonder Woman will be produced by Joel Silver and Leonard Goldberg, and is based on the DC Comics character created by William Moulton Marston.

Wonder Woman will be released worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company & is scheduled for a 2006 release, presumely after Superman Returns.

"Everybody is in agreement that casting is not an issue right now," Whedon says. "It's not a vehicle to be built around a particular star. We want to write the thing, find the right character and then figure out who should play her. There are various famous people whose names have come up, because that always happens, but you know, we're talking about Wonder Woman here. Those are tough booties to fill... I think we will go a little younger than the traditional idea of Wonder Woman"

Kim Basinger, Jessica Biel, Minnie Driver, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jordan Bayne (Poltergeist:The Legacy), & Satu Rautaharju (Dawson's Creek) have all been rumored to be the next Wonder Woman. But according to a report in today's Herald Sun, Mischa Barton is another on Warner's "Wonder Woman" wish-list. Also, Sandra Bullock, who's been long rumored to take on the role has been quoted by The New York Post saying "the idea of my doing Wonder Woman also bit the dust." Check here for more news as it develops.
