It's opening in the most North American theaters ever! From The Hollywood Reporter:
The film's more than 4,366 domestic playdates is a record, surpassing the 4,362 theaters for May 2007's bow of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." Double- and triple-screening at many venues means "Dark Knight" will play on 9,200 screens in the U.S. and Canada.
Its engagements include 94 Imax venues -- Nolan shot long segments using Imax-format cameras -- and most of those giant-screen auditoriums were sold out by midweek. A Warners exec estimated that Imax presales totaled $3.5 million, with advance ticketing for other venues adding considerably to that total.
"Dark Knight" also bows in more than a dozen foreign markets this weekend and several more the following frame, but some of the bigger territories won't get the film until August because of calendar-driven marketing considerations in some countries. "Dark Knight" rung up a big first-day estimate of almost $2.3 million Wednesday in Australia, where the territory's usual Thursday bow was moved up one day to take advantage of a final week of school holidays.

Dogmatic Films is putting together a documentary about Comic-Con and is looking for young artists who plan to share their portfolio or comic with publishers in San Diego next week. Here are the details:
Throughout Comic-Con in San Diego next week, Dogmatic Films is filming a documentary about the experience from the perspective of several attendees. In addition to showcasing the cultural phenomenon that Comic-Con has become through interviews with celebrities, industry executives, comic book store owners, costumed veterans, first timers, and so on, we will be following several attendees throughout the convention. Like many Comic-Con attendees, our main subjects are either looking to be discovered or are hoping to discover something new for themselves.
We have lined up most of our participants, but are actively looking for a young artist who is bringing his/her portfolio to be reviewed by DC Comics, Marvel, etc, in hopes of getting a job as an artist. Secondly, we are also looking for someone with an independent comic book hoping to get it picked up by a bigger publisher or attract a wider audience.
In addition, if you’re an industry executive, comic book store owner, professional artist, and so on, we’d love to interview you. One of our cameras will be dedicated for these interviews, so we can accomodate your schedule at the convention.
If you or someone you know would be interested in this exciting project, please email us at: dogmaticfilms@gmail.com and we will arrange to meet at the convention. Thank you!
Press Release
World-renowned fantasy artist Frank Frazetta filed a complaint today with the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York, against publisher J. David Spurlock and Vanguard Productions. The complaint alleges that in publishing the book FRAZETTA DEFINITIVE REFERENCE, featuring Frazetta's artwork and prominently displaying his unique signature, Spurlock and Vanguard used the artist's name for advertizing and trade purposes without obtaining prior approval, thus committing a violation of Section 50 of the Civil Rights Law of the State of New York.
The complaint further alleges that, during the period beginning on or about April 8, 2008, Spurlock and Vanguard knowingly, willfully, and in bad faith released in New York State and elsewhere literature prominently using Frazetta's name in advertizing the book, including solicitation materials clearly stating, "endorsed by the artist," despite possessing knowledge that such statement was contrary to fact and made without the artist's consent. No agreement exists, oral or written, between Spurlock or Vanguard and Frank Frazetta.
Section 50 of the Civil Rights Law of the State of New York guarantees the right of privacy, and states that, "A person, firm or corporation that uses for advertising purposes, or for the purposes of trade, the name, portrait or picture of any living person without having first obtained the written consent of such person, or if a minor of his or her parent or guardian, is guilty of a misdemeanor."
Section 51 states, "Any person whose name, portrait, picture or voice is used within this state for advertising purposes or for the purposes of trade without the written consent first obtained ... may maintain an equitable action in the supreme court of this state against the person, firm or corporation so using his name, portrait, picture or voice, to prevent and restrain the use thereof; and may also sue and recover damages for any injuries sustained by reason of such use ..."
Stating in the complaint that Spurlock and Vanguard have been "unjustly enriched by unlawful use of the plaintiff's name and reputation as an artist," Frazetta demands that Spurlock and Vanguard be enjoined and restrained from using his name, image, or likeness in distribution, promotion, or sale of the book.
Based on Section 51 of the Civil Rights Law of the State of New York, Frazetta has further asked for compensatory damages of $2,000,000 and exemplary damages of $500,000, while requiring that Spurlock and Vanguard provide an account of all proceeds received from sales of the book. Frazetta is represented by The Law Office of Tedd Kessler, PC, located in New York, NY. Vanguard Productions is located in Clinton, NJ and is represented by Penino & Moynihan, LLP, White Plains, NY.

In the 1950s he illustrated comic books and comic strips, then in the 1960s began painting covers for magazines, record albums, and movie posters. Those, along with his award-winning paperback book covers propelled him to fame, establishing him as one of the most popular and influential artists of the 2nd half of the 20th Century. In 2003 the artist was the subject of the documentary film Frazetta: Painting with Fire.

The trailer for Watchmen, set in a world where costumed crime fighting heroes have been outlawed, was posted on Empire earlier. Since then the trailer was taken down (for legal reasons or site issues I don't know) but Cinema Blend has it up if you can't wait. The trailer will also be shown in US cinemas before "The Dark Knight."
Watchmen, starring Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Matthew Goode, Stephen McHattie and Carla Gugino will be released March 6, 2009.
update: You can also find the new trailer on the Apple site!
Beginning with with October's issue #34, Sterling Gates, Jamal Igle & Keith Champagne will become the new creative team on Supergirl. I can't wait! Hopefully with this team working on Kara, her personality will be fleshed out more, as well as giving her a decent supporting cast and her own enemies. Well that, and tighter integration with the other "Super" titles of course.
The New York Times reports that "Invincible: The Series," an animated version of Image Comics’ hugely popular superhero title created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker will be developed by MTV New Media and available July 22 on iTunes, Xbox Live, MTV.com, MTV2 and MTV Mobile.
The show uses actual pages of Kirkman and Walker’s comic book and animates them through a process called Bomb-X. The stories are filled with motion, music and vocal performances similar to those of a traditionally produced cartoon. MTV2 will air an “Invincible” special at 10 p.m. on Friday, June 25.

Graphic novel aficionados rejoice! Now for the first time since its original publication in 1984, the black and white comics from Scott McCloud's classic series Zot! are being reprised in their entirety. This commemorative compilation marks the first time that these comics are being offered together in one volume. In Zot! The Complete Black and White Collection: 1987-1991 (Harper; Trade Paperback Original; On Sale July 22, 2008; $24.95), McCloud not only includes never-seen-before art, but he also provides extensive commentary about his creative process, his evolution as an artist and the state of the comics industry during this incredibly pivotal period.
McCloud first created Zot! at the age of 23, when both he and the comics world were poised on the threshold of adulthood. In fact, it was this series and its frenetic and innovative exploration of comics' potential that ultimately helped shape McCloud's views and set the stage for his ground breaking theoretical works, Understanding Comics, Reinventing Comics, and Making Comics.
Hailed by Samuel R. Delaney, author of Dark Reflections, as ". . .refreshing, lively, and truly entertaining," this collection of McCloud's stories combines the best ideas from Manga, alternative comics and superheroes and in many ways serves as a formal precursor to the wave of American Manga that was to come.
The series follows the adventures of Zachary T. Paleozogt, A.K.A. "Zot", who lives in "the far-flung future of 1965," a utopian Earth of world peace, robot butlers and flying cars. When Zot's travels take him to a world of disappointment and broken promises--the Earth we live in--his one consolation is meeting the lovely Jenny Weaver. Stepping across portals to each other's world, Zot's and Jenny's lives are forever changed.
Celebrated by comics fans throughout the world, McCloud's books have been published in more than 16 languages. Among his many honors, Scott is the recipient of the Quill Award for Best Graphic Novel in 2007 for Making Comics. The legendary Will Eisner, has called McCloud's work "a landmark dissection and intellectual consideration of comics as a valid medium."
In so far as Zot! is the fictional series that made all subsequent McCloud books on comics theory possible, this commemorative edition deserves a special place on every comic collector's bookshelf.

Comic-Con International, the largest comic book and popular arts event in the United States, is proud to announce that Archie Goodwin and Larry Lieber have been selected to receive the 2008 Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing. The choice was made unanimously by a blue-ribbon committee chaired by writer and historian Mark Evanier.
The Bill Finger Award was instituted in 2005 under the supervision of comic book legend Jerry Robinson. The awards committee is charged each year with selecting two recipients, one living and one deceased.
"With all the writers who seem worthy of this award, you'd think it would be an impossible decision," Evanier explains. "But this year, two names just jumped off the list of candidates. Much like the late Bill Finger, Larry Lieber and Archie Goodwin did important, groundbreaking work in our field that has not received the recognition it deserves. We're hoping to rectify that a little with these awards."
Archie Goodwin did his first work in comics (mystery stories for Harvey, along with assisting Leonard Starr with the newspaper strip On Stage) in the late 1950s. From 1964 to 1967, he produced a body of acclaimed work as writer/editor of Creepy and Eerie, then moved on to work as both a writer and editor for DC Comics and Marvel, writing memorable scripts for Batman, Iron Man, Star Wars, Manhunter, and many others. He also wrote several newspaper strips, including Star Wars, Secret Agent X-9, and Captain Kate. Goodwin passed away in 1998.
Larry Lieber began working in 1950 at the company now known as Marvel, doing artwork under the editorship of his brother, Stan Lee. In the late 1950s, he and Stan comprised the entire writing staff for the company, and Larry's work on monster comics (including the acclaimed "Fin Fang Foom") helped lay the groundwork for the Marvel superhero line of the sixties. For that line, Larry scripted the first stories of Thor and Iron Man and many early tales of The Human Torch. He is currently the illustrator of the Spider-Man newspaper strip.
The Bill Finger Award honors the memory of William Finger (1914"1974), who was the first and, some say, most important writer of Batman. Many have called him the "unsung hero" of the character and have hailed his work not only on that iconic figure but on dozens of others, primarily for DC Comics.
In addition to Evanier, the selection committee consists of Charles Kochman (executive editor at Harry N. Abrams), comics and animation writer Paul Dini, writer Tony Isabella, and writer/editor Marv Wolfman.
The 2008 awards are part of Comic-Con International with DC Comics as the major sponsor, along with supporting sponsors Comics Buyer’s Guide (CBG) and Heritage Auctions.
The Bill Finger Award will be presented during the 2008 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards ceremony at this summer's Comic-Con on Friday, July 25.
Additional information on the Finger Award can be found at www.comic-con.org/cci/cci_finger.shtml
