Press Release

Fans of IDW’s first Doctor Who miniseries featuring the Tenth Doctor had one constant request -- give us the past Doctors, too. In August, they’ll get their wish Tenfold, on the pages of Doctor Who: The Forgotten.

This new series not only finds a clever way to present a story featuring all of the Doctor’s incarnations, but it also features award-winning artist Pia Guerra in her first regular assignment since the acclaimed Y, The Last Man series came to a close.

Doctor Who: The Forgotten is a six-part tale written by Tony Lee (Starship Troopers) and featuring resident Doctor Who expert and colorist Charlie Kirchoff (Doctor Who Classic, Doctor Who: Agent Provocateur) adding hues to Guerra’s linework. Artist Nick Roche will again provide covers for IDW’s Doctor Who series.

In Doctor Who: The Forgotten, Dr. Who finds himself stranded in a strange Museum that’s dedicated to him; and with no TARDIS in sight. The Doctor and Martha must make sense of their surroundings, hindered by one small fact… the Doctor has lost his memories of every one of his previous incarnations! With items relevant to each Doctor in their possession, The Doctor must try to use them to regain his memories before it’s too late.

In the popular Doctor Who novel “The Eight Doctors,” writer Terrance Dick, of whom Tony Lee is a great fan, re-visited previous incarnations of the Doctor in the midst of adventures from the original series. In IDW’s Doctor Who: The Forgotten, Lee decided to take the alternate route and create all new adventures for the classic Doctors. “Although it's always nice to revisit old friends,” Lee says, “I think we can give more 'forgotten tales' in these short flashbacks. We have the First Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan meeting Egyptians; we have the Second, Jamie and Zoe meeting space lizards; the Third, Jo and The Brigadier defeating aliens on Dartmoor; the Fourth and Romana in millennium Paris; the Fifth, Tegan and Turlough facing a more recent addition in a Village cricket match; the Sixth and Peri in a courtroom; the Seventh and Ace in an alien war torn city; the Eighth alone in a Count of Monte Cristo setting; and the Ninth and Rose in the trenches of World War I. And every single one of them has been an utter joy to write.”

The creative partnership between Lee and artist Pia Guerra was initiated after they met recently at the Earls Court VIP launch of the Doctor Who Exhibition. In a pub afterwards, they talked about what their favorite episodes were and how they wished certain characters could work great in a story together. “We formed a strong bond that day, I feel” Lee said.

Lee added, “The funniest thing is that in the UK I say I'm writing this book and suddenly everyone's excited. In the US, I talk about the books to nods, and when I mention Pia -- that's when the squeals start.”

Doctor Who: The Forgotten #1 (JUN08 4045) will arrive in mid-August. Doctor Who: Agent Provocateur TPB (JUN08 4047), collecting the first IDW miniseries, will be available in August as well.

In Progeny, teenager Mike Talan's world is turned upside down when he discovers that he's inherited his grandfather's legacy. You see, Mike's grandfather wasn't an ordinary man. Mike's grandfather is a legend. The greatest hero of them all: Night-Ray. Confronted with the discovery of his grandfather's power-band, flight boots, costume, and journal, Mike decides to try out being a super-hero. He quickly finds himself working alongside other super-powered individuals as they work together to build the foundations of a new era of heroes. An era for Progeny, the next generation of legends that will fight to bring back hope to a weary world.

The New Kid. The Geek. The Rocker. The Cheerleader. The Goth. An unlikely group of friends under normal circumstances, right? These kids are more than just homo-sapiens, they're Mecha-Sapiens! Empowered with the ability to transform into robotic warriors, they are Earth's latest batch of unlikely heroes; the first of a brand new Mecha-Nation!

Weisman and Cook forged a creative partnership when they were both working for Disney's Gargoyles animated series in the nineties. "[We] are very excited to reveal the secret world of the Mecha-Nation and Progeny as SLG comic books," Weisman says.

Progeny and Mecha-Nation will be published by SLG Publishing in late 2009. Greg Weisman will be appearing at the SLG Publishing booth (#1815) during Comic-Con International and will also discuss the two new projects at the SLG Panel on Saturday July 26th.

The plot of the movie is based on George Perez' 1987 "Gods and Mortals" arc. It will also feature Russell's Waitress costar Nathan Fillion as Steve Trevor, as well as Alfred Molina, Rosario Dawson, and Virginia Madsen.

Variety reports Kevin Michael Richardson, Sanaa Lathan, and Nia Long will be joining the cast of The Cleveland Show, the Family Guy spinoff show announced earlier this year. Richardson will provide the voice of Lester, described as a white redneck who lives next door to Cleveland. The show should debut sometime in 2009.

The folks at Redmond are debuting a new 60GB Xbox 360 to replace the $349 pricepoint, which will be available in "early August." You can pick up a 20GB "while supplies last," but the $279 Arcade and $449 Elite prices are still firm. The price drop is expected to be officially announced during Monday's E3 keynote.

The Elite edition also recieves a $50 price drop on Amazon, now costing $400.

On the PS3 side of things, Sony Japan has said that there are no plans to drop the current price of the PlayStation 3.

Speaking to investors, chief financial officer Nobuyuki Oneda said "Our strategy is not to sell more quantity for PS3 but to concentrate on profitability. Our plan is not to reduce the price."

Also, Sony could be replacing the 40GB PlayStation 3 model with a new version as early as next month, according to a Wal-Mart data sheet obtained by Joystiq. Wonder what'll replace it? Hopefully something will be announced at E3.

Just awesome... I am really psyched for this game!

The upcoming fighting game Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe's story will be written by comic writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. This will be the first game in the franchise that will not bear the "M" Rating as confirmed by the producer Ed Boon in a video interview.

So far, only 5 arenas have been announced (The "Hell" arena and "Lin Kuei Temple" arenas from Mortal Kombat, as well as DC locations such as Metropolis, the Batcave, Gotham City, and Central City).

The infamous finishing moves will be performed by all Mortal Kombatants and DC Comics villains, but not by any of DC's heroes. The heroes will instead have "brutalities," moves which inflict pain upon the recipients without totally murdering them. Epic Games reports that the game is being developed using their Unreal Engine 3 and the release has been announced for the PS3 and Xbox 360. More screens can be found here, as well as upcoming announcements from E3.

Nu Image/Millennium Films is pleased to announce the return of RED SONJA to the big screen. The film will star Rose McGowan as the mythical she-devil with a sword, Red Sonja. The film is presented by Robert Rodriguez and will be directed by Douglas Aarniokoski

The producers are Rodriguez, Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Joe Gatta and George Furla. The film’s executive producers are Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short, Luke Lieberman and Nick Barrucci. The screenplay is written by David White. Red Sonja is based on a heroine created by Robert E Howard and originally published by Marvel Comics and created by Roy Thomas, and is now published by Dynamite Entertainment.

In her return we find Red Sonja, a young girl risen from the ashes of tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time. This She-Devil with a Sword blindly seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family. In her path of destruction she discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers: to save all Hyrkania from the villainous Kulan Gath!

“This is an amazing property and film for our company,” says Nu Image/Millennium’s Avi Lerner. ”Working with the talented Robert Rodriguez, having Rose McGowan as Red Sonja and Douglas Aarniokoski directing is a fantastic combination. We could not be happier.”

The Nu Image/Millennium deals were structured and orchestrated by Lonnie Ramati, executive vice president of business affairs.

“It is our intent to take this opportunity to build on the world of branded entertainment with Red Sonja as well as Conan, Hercules and The Three Musketeers titles. There is history with these mythical heroes, and success,” says Millennium’s Boaz Davidson. “We were pleased Joe Gatta brought us this project and Luke Lieberman with it.

Production is set to begin in October of this year. Locations are being scouted in Michigan and throughout the United States. Additional casting is also being considered.

Executive Producer and Vice President of Red Sonja, LLC, Luke Lieberman says "Red Sonja is a unique character with a rich history and bright destiny. Her struggles and triumphs have endured in the hearts of fans for decades, and now her legend can reach a truly global audience. Rose Mcgowan's passion and Robert Rodriguez's vision will bring the 'She-Devil' to life on the grandest of stages."

"Dynamite has been publishing Red Sonja comics for the last several years, reinventing the character for a modern audience and we're exceptionally pleased that the right combination of talent has been found to bring her to life on the big screen. It was a long search -- three years -- but Rose is ideal for the part, and Robert as producer will ensure that a pure creative vision remains in place, and captures elements of the stories that Dynamite has been telling,” says Executive Producer Nick Barrucci. Barrucci is also President/Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment.

The Dark Knight co-writer David Goyer has revealed that Catwoman and the Penguin are unlikely to feature in future Batman sequels.

Goyer explained that, despite re-introducing the Joker in the upcoming sequel, the filmmakers want to explore new villains in future films.

He said: "Batman has been published for 70 years. In the first movie, we used Ra's Al Ghul and the Scarecrow, who had not been in the movies before, and had not been in the '60s TV show before. There are dozens if not hundreds of other characters that fit that bill. Everyone says it's got to be the Penguin or Catwoman [in the next film]... well I completely disagree."

Well either way, here's a short list of who I'd like to see in a future Batman movie:

Riddler
Deadshot
Black Mask
Ventriloquist & Scarface
Mad Hatter
Hush
Clayface
Man-Bat
Holiday

Here's hoping!

Reuters reports that Marvel's latest film, The Incredible Hulk is unlikely to get a sequel.

"We're happy with the financial results, even if they [only] reach the first film's levels," a Marvel insider insisted. "Having a sequel is not the definition of success."

That being said, about one month after release, the Louis Leterrier-directed "The Incredible Hulk" has earned $125 million, the same as what "Hulk" raked in at the same time in its run. "Hulk" finished with $132 million [domestically], and its successor is unlikely to do much better.

"Hollywood is always about perception," he noted. "The first Hulk had such high expectations after the NBC-Universal merger, then with the new Hulk film, Marvel was able to underplay the importance of the success after the great success of Iron Man this summer. So the new one overdelivered, relative to its underpromise."

It's key to remember that "Hulk" has yet to be released in some markets and huge digital video market... either way, it's been a great year for comic bok movies, who knows what the future holds?

Tatsunoko, the legendary Japanese Anime studio who brought us classics like Speed Racer and Gatchaman get the Marvel vs Capcom treatment in the upcoming arcade fighter: Tatsunoko VS Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes!

Characters announced so far include Ryu, Chun-Li & Alex (Street Fighter) join Batsu Ichimonji (Rival Schools), Morrigan Aensland (Darkstalkers) & Sōki (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams), Eagle Ken (Gatchaman), Casshern, Tekkaman, Yatterman No. 1, Hurricane Polymar, Gold Lightan. Hopefully, characters like Dante, Sigma & Zero (Mega Man) will make it to the final lineup. I'm also hoping it surpasses Marvel vs Capcom 2 in total characters included as well, as MvC2 had 56 to choose from. TvC should be in Japanese arcades by this Winter. Capcom please bring this game to North America!

Sony's "Hancock" made an estimated $107.3 million over 5½ days to become the third-biggest Fourth of July opener of all time after “Transformers” and “Spider-Man 2.” Of “Hancock’s” total tally, an estimated $66 million was grossed over the weekend. Internationally, the movie had a launch of $78.3 million.

"Hancock" notched the year's third-largest foreign opening after "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "Iron Man" -- and did so while holding off on launches in key territories such as France, Mexico and Russia, where it opens next weekend.

Here's an exclusive clip featuring Joker crashing Harvey Dent's party... Batman: The Dark Knight will be in theaters July 18. Happy fourth of July!

Warner Bros has released yet another new trailer for The Dark Knight, on a cross promotional website created by Dominos Pizza.

The new trailer intercuts The Joker’s monologue (a pretty intense and cool moment from the film) over the usual clips from the movie. Head on over to The Dark Knight Vault and check out the new trailer in the movie extras section. Thanks SlashFilm!
